Weight Loss Wednesday #4 and what I learned about good running form

Weight: 215.8 lb (-1.2 lbs this week, -10.2 lbs total)

I officially require a belt unless I’m going to invest in coin-slot cream.  Also, I finally felt confident enough to wear a babydoll tee.  It’s been in my closet forever, but I only ever wear it under sweaters.

Yeah, I'm not quite where I want to be YET, but I still felt like I looked a lot slimmer. Also, the angle I had to stand to take this picture makes it less flattering. Also, my hair is wet, not greasy.

So yay for me!  I’m officially down more than 10 pounds and I feel like my crazy exercise routines (1-2 hours 5-6 days a week) is the only thing keeping me from losing my mind.  This is not a fun week.  My  Strong Body by Rebecca cyber training ends this week, so I need to decide what I want to do next.  I’ll post a full review of the program when it is all over, but in the mean time, I’m definitely ready to shake up my strength training.  As an aside, my shoulders are sore in that awesome I worked my butt off way.  I’m starting to love that feeling.

In other news, I attended a good form running clinic at the local Fleet Feet last Saturday.  Ian from Newton Running gave a great workshop about the biomechanics of proper running (and totally spoke my geek language).  At the time, I didn’t think I was learning anything, but yesterday I applied his cadence (and saw 8-something minute mile pace on my watch for a brief moment) and then tried to focus on landing on my midfoot and doing the Land-Lever-Lift he demonstrated.  I ran a 12:04 mile followed by an 11:29 mile, my new personal best.

Until this morning that is.

I woke up ready to tackle Kari’s “I didn’t peak in high school” virtual mile.  Actually, that’s a lie, I didn’t want to run at all, but after doing my Rebecca Black shoulders/abs workout, I decided to do my run.  Once I got out the I realized it was time to do my mile.  Mile 1 was a warm-up with 11:55 mile/minute.  Then I did my forrealsies mile in…

11:04!

Holy cow, that’s a time that real runner’s with blogs post.  I’ve seen that time on people’s DailyMile accounts that aren’t in my pace group.  I did start to cramp at the end, and my 0.15 mile recovery walk was punctuated with heavy breathing, but I felt amazing!  Did I mention it’s still hot and humid.  Should I expect to see this time drop in the fall or winter?

On a final note, what the crap is going on in this picture?

I see a bunch of people running. And some weirdo trying to make Mollie her vampire life partner. Maybe I need to watch less Buffy and Angel? All running photos shamelessly purloined from the Fleet Feet FB page. Sorry, Jeff!

So, who had tried good form or Chi running?  Did it work for you?  How should I celebrate losing 10 pounds?  Anyone want to guess how much longer I can force these jeans to stay on?  I only own 1 pair and I’m too cheap/hate pants shopping too much to buy new ones.  What is your favorite place to buy pants?  I’m almost the right size for mainstream clothing!

Awesome mile time! And also great job on the weight loss! When you get to 200 can we celebrate somehow? I really want to celebrate with an inappropriate gift of some sort.

  2. Sarah says:

    Congratulations on your weight loss!!!

I noticed that I got faster when I corrected my running form too! I haven’t read Chi running yet, but it’s definitely on my list!

  3. Raquelita says:

Congrats on another week of loss! You might try thrift stores to get some cheaper clothes during the transition stages of weight loss – or take your pants to a tailor to be taken in for the time being.

And you should never ever watch less Buffy and Angel.

  4. Congrats on those awesome times! Nothing like a virtual mile race to get you going!!

  5. Kara says:

Congrats on the weight loss! I think you should get new pants now, life is too short to be worried about coin slot showage.

I like Old Navy for jeans. I usually get the diva fit because I have junk in my trunk (otherwise known as my hill locomotion)

I’m faster in cooler weather, so I think you’ll find it to be a lot easier when it gets cooler!

Thanks for the shout out about the raffle. I totally owe you a cookie 🙂

  6. Wow, you are a speed demon!!! I am a slow runner, but I like to tell myself it is more about getting out there and doing it than it is about pace.
Congrats on the 10 pounds also! That must be so motivating 🙂

  7. Michael says:

Congrats on the weight loss!! That’s awesome! I bet you feel great. Celebrate with something fitness related – buy a new pair of running shorts, or hat, etc.

Yes your times will come down in the fall. I am running on average about 1 to 2 minutes slower per mile than I was in the Spring.

I have read Chi Running, but I think a clinic would be much better. A little hard to visualize it just through the book.

  8. Great going, girl!! Keep it up! 🙂

  9. Seriously awesome job on the weight loss and having clean, not greasy hair 🙂

Also, way to go on the timed mile!! Where’s your picture so i can post it with your time??

If you’re too cheap for new pants, go to target, their pants are like $1.

  10. Amy says:

You look fantastic! I am so proud of you! 🙂 I’m like you and don’t want to spend a lot to buy new clothes until closer to fall when I go back to work. I like the thrift store idea. You totally have to do something fantastic when you get into onederland!

  11. Cherie says:

I love Fleet Fleet running clinics! I’m slightly gimpy and injured with a tibia stress frx right now, but plan to use everything I’ve been learning from them as soon as I can! That time is a great one to me! Before I got injured, my PR was a 12:18. I’d love to be in the 11s! And congrats on the 10lbs! 🙂

  12. Congratulations on your weight loss and awesome mile run! 😀

  13. Abby says:

I agree with others – 10+ pounds is definitely cause for celebration… do something that makes you happy 🙂

  14. Katy says:

YAYAYAYAY!!!!!!! Congrats on losing 10 pounds!!!! 🙂 And your fastest mile! You are just kicking ass and taking names girl!!

  15. Marissa says:

woohoo! Congrats to YOU! Awesome mile too 🙂
I’d say celebrate by doing something totally amazing that you would have never done before! Hmm…think of anything yet?!
Favorite pants- I.N.C from Macy’s…whew, they fit perfectly and are sized to fit people other than stick figures! Love them!

  16. Kim (Book Worm Runs) says:

You are freakin’ awesome!!! Amazing job on the weight loss AND the mile…you definitely deserve to celebrate big time!! 🙂

  17. Congratulations on 10lbs! Every pound is an accomplishment but the big numbers like 10 are super exciting!

  18. Sara F says:

Congratulations on the weight loss and PR! So proud of you, lady!

  19. Judi says:

Congrats on the weight loss….you are doing awesome!!! Sounds like Newton and Chi Running are sooo much alike, just use different terms perhaps. I like the principles of chi running, but I have to work on incorporating one things at a time or it all goes to heck in a hand basket.

  20. Hey! The puggles go to James’s grandparents house. We are VERY lucky that way. They live on multiple acres of land, so not only are they spoiled by them inside the house, they are very spoiled outside and have tons of land to play on.

Yeah, I try to be firm yet respectful with my mom, but she just doesn’t get it. She thinks she’s being funny but SHE’S NOT.

  21. Mandy says:

Congrats on the weight and the SPEEDY time! I’m sure everyone is different – but for me – I’m faster in “cooler” weather…but slower in “cold” weather. It all depends on where the temperature is in relation to freezing. Below or near freezing is much harder for me – it’s a lung issue. I may not be fast enough to run with you when I come back! *sniffles pathetically*

I’m totally loving the inappropriate gift idea. Too bad that zombie target was so pricey.

Oh – and I HATE, HATE, HATE clothes shopping too. Maybe this is why we get along so well?

  22. Michelle says:

Mazel tov on an awesome mile time and losing more weight! That is fantastic, you should definitely celebrate by purchasing pants that fit. Gap usually has a few options for us larger curvy type, I suggest checking them out (the outlets usually have great deals, I think I bought a pair for $25).

  23. Sam Walton says:

i’d say it’s been a pretty successful week – fast and skinny!! wahoo 🙂

  24. Heather says:

Congrats on the weight loss! Awesome! I had good luck at Good Will for transition wear. And Old Navy too for jeans. You’ll feel even better in jeans that fit! 🙂 And way to go on tour super fast mile! Great work!

  25. Sara W. says:

Yay! Congrats on the 10 pounds – you rock! When I was consistently losing weight, I started buying jeans and pants from consignment shops to save the cash. There are three really good ones in Grandview – nice clothing too! One of the three starts at a size XL and up too. I got dress pants (which NEVER fit me) from there last week for $9! Let me know if you want the names!

You should celebrate losing 10 lbs by going to eat Sushi with me – oh, is that a bad way to celebrate!?

I am definitely trying out the new cadence thing next time we run together!

    See you soon!

  26. Congrats on the weight loss! But it sounds like you work out too much just like me. But honestly, it’s the only thing that keeps my mind off food. Isn’t that ridiculous?
My crossfit trainer tells me I need to lengthen my stride, and when I do that I”m faster, but it’s hard to teach this old dog new tricks.
